FANUC Data Server and external program operation: distinguish storage, transfer and execution

Published Updated

If a large program will not fit in the CNC, identify whether the issue concerns storage, transfer or execution. Based on official Data Server material, this article explains file-flow and selection checks, distinguishing a network connection or external storage from actual program-operation capability.

“The program is too large” can describe different problems: insufficient internal space, an incomplete file transfer or an operating method that does not meet the requirement. Before discussing Data Server, separate where the file is stored, how it reaches the controller and where it is executed from. This helps avoid choosing the wrong solution.

Function and model scope

The Data Server / Fast Data Server described on p. 550 of the FANUC Plus-series function catalog combines storage media on the controller with an Ethernet connection. It transfers files among a host, CNC memory and Data Server media, and supports the corresponding external program-operation methods. The catalog lists ordering entries for series including 0i-TF Plus, 0i-MF Plus and 30i/31i/32i-B Plus. The software version and actual hardware conditions still need checking against the machine’s documentation.

Page 551 of the same catalog describes Explorer Connection separately as an additional connection capability. Seeing files through one application therefore does not establish that every client, editing method or operating method is available. This article describes a workflow, not a universal configuration menu for different versions.

Map the file flow first

Describe production preparation as a sequence: where the program is generated, where the reviewed version is stored, how it reaches the machine, which copy is selected for execution and where subsequent edits are saved. Identify the authoritative version at each step to reduce confusion such as a computer holding an updated file while the machine still runs the old one.

For example, suppose a mold program exceeds the available internal space. When evaluating external storage or network-based operation, check not only file size but also required subprograms, paths and the recovery method after an interruption. This is a requirements example; it does not imply that any large file can be run directly over a network.

Five questions to answer before choosing

  • Which storage and communication hardware is actually installed, and have the available functions been confirmed?
  • Is the need offline file transfer, centralized management or program execution from an external location?
  • Do filenames, directory structure and related programs meet the machine’s requirements?
  • What stopping, recovery and version-checking procedures does the equipment specify for network or media problems?
  • Before production, how will file completeness and selection of the correct version be verified, and how will the result be recorded?

Do not confuse USB operation with Data Server

The FANUC Load & Go page separately describes program operation through USB media. This is another category of program handling; it does not mean that a USB port provides Data Server, or that connecting a network cable enables every external program-operation function. Assess that choice against the actual workflow and the machine’s support.

The final comparison should consider file management, program-change frequency and recovery after interruption, not just the media’s stated capacity. For program capacity itself, see storage capacity and registered program count; further material is in the OPTION section.
